Our philanthropy is to raise funds to assist in the transportation and lodging of patients and their guardians while being treated at the 'Shrine Hospitals for Children' of North America. Especially the hospital in Mexico City, it is the largest hospital in the Shrine Hospital system and services all of Mexico and most of Central America. We also support our local Shrine Centers and the Supreme 'Q'.
Nahuatl (meaning "clear language" from the derivative word nawatlatolli) is the ceremonial language of the Order of Quetzalcoatl. Although it is difficult to ascertain what language the Toltecs actually spoke, the Aztec/Mexicas who claim the Toltecs as their ancestors were speaking Nahuatl when the Spanish arrived in the early sixteenth century. Today, Nahuatl is still spoken by approximately 1.5 million people in Mexico, mostly in the central and southern areas of the country.
Pure classical Nahuatl is rarely heard because the Spanish,in trying to put spoken Nahuatl into a written format, used many of their own language phonetic sounds to approximate the clicks and guttural sounds which marked pure Nahuatl. Translating these Spanish-influenced sounds into the Spanish written language caused many variations from pure Nahuatl.
